RPG Input

So I'm working on my new superhero RPG, and I wanted to get a little bit of feedback from the players in regards to a few elements.  If you are interested in playing, please take a moment to read the questions and provide me with your thoughts.  It will help me to make the game to suit the player's tastes.

The questions:

1. Restrictions on character selection - What restrictions, if any, do you think should be placed on the characters players can choose from?  For instance, only DC characters, or only characters from a certain time period.  With few or no restrictions, there are more available options and greater flexibility and creativity possible.  However, there is also a greater chance of the "crossover conundrum", where in you run into difficulties created between two universe's rules.  For instance, Wolverine's claws can cut through anything, but superman is invulnerable, so what happens if they fight?  Restricting universes helps prevent that, but it also limits creativity.  Due to the nature of the game, a restriction on shape shifters may be in order.  Either a complete ban, or a ban on taking on male form, as doing so would invalidate the central TG theme of the game.

2. Multiple versions of characters - Some characters have been revised and reborn several times throughout the years, sometimes even having very different powers.  For instance, the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman has the lasso of truth, and can throw her tiara like a boomerang.  But the Justice League Wonder Woman doesn't have the lasso or tiara, but can fly like superman.  Should different players be allowed to play different versions of different characters, or should each character be only available to one player, regardless of revisions?  By allowing multiple versions, it helps to prevent any disputes over who gets to play which character, but it can result in confusion, or situations where the entire team is one character and thus lacks diversity.

3. Villains gone good - Since there is no mental change, it is possible for characters to take on a villain's form and powers instead of a hero's.  There are some in character reasons it may not suit the setting, but no real game play reasons to not allow it.  Allowing it will, again, increase character choices and creativity.

4.  Name of the game - I've not yet come up with a good name for this campaign.  The best I can think of so far is "Super Friends (with benefits)", but I'm not really in love with it.  Whoever comes up with the best name will win a digital cookie.

  1. I like the idea and it sounds fun but when would play happen and how often. would it be over a chat room or the like? I've played with online games before and always been a little disappointed in the pacing.

    1. Gameplay would be done via forum post. I am aware of the usual pacing issues, but it is simply impossible to get everyone who wants to play together at the same time. There are simply too many issues in scheduling.

To counteract this, I plan on breaking the game up into missions. Rather than one over all story line, there will be several smaller ones. Players can take part in multiple missions at a time, and will even be encouraged to create and run missions of their own. Thus if one part gets bogged down, hopefully others will remain active.

It's not a perfect solution, but it is the best I can do given the nature of online role play.
