Weekly Comic 3/1/13

Alright, I know I'm a bit late with this one.  I actually almost didn't make one at all, what with everything going on, on top of getting ready for my sister to visit.  She'll be arriving later today, actually.

Anyway, here is the comic, I hope that you enjoy it.  It comes from menage a 3 (menagea3.net).  I actually don't like the comic much, but the artwork is fantastic.  So I basically read it for use here.  This one inspired me the moment I saw it.  It was just too perfect not to use.

I actually ended up changing the dialogue both more and less than I had planned to.  Originally I had thought to just alter the opening panel to reference the change, but leave the rest mostly the same.  However, I just couldn't quite get the feeling I wanted, so I started altering it more.  Then I ended up running out of space in the word balloon, and couldn't fit it in.  So I was left having to do something about halfway in between the two.  I was going to add in a bit about how the change made one into what one's ideal girl would look like.  So if you liked blondes, you'd be a blonde, if you liked tomboys, you'd be a tomboy.  I had to cut that part of the story out, though.  So it ended up being a situation where the why and the how are left to the reader to imagine.  Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  I did try playing with the fonts a bit, though.  I was trying to give a visual representation of the characters vocal mannerisms.  That one was very feminine, while the other was still somewhat masculine.

  1. HA! Another great one Angel!

I have to admit that I found the font a little difficult to read. I had to enlarge it quite a bit just to make it out. Don't get me wrong though, I love the use of different fonts as it does help make the characters 'sound' different!

    1. I'm glad you like it, and I appreciate the feedback. Was one of the fonts easier to read than the other? Or were they both difficult? I've actually been hunting around for new, free fonts to use in differentiating characters. I spent about an hour before I settled on these, and even then I wasn't totally satisfied with the choice. I've tried using different colors, but in a black and white comic it just doesn't look right to me. So if anyone as any suggestions, either on alternate methods or for new fonts, please let me know.

    2. I'd say Caitlyn's speaking font was easier to read. I could struggle through that one at normal size where I had to enlarge the cap to read Angel's speaking font.

I agree, adding color to a black and white original image is hard to pull off. The colors need to be very unsaturated to work at all. And even then, they will immediately pull attention to them self.

As for new fonts... I've always enjoyed using 1001fonts.com. They have a good selection and it's easy to make custom examples so that you can see what YOUR words will look like in it.
